//People believe, a belief that has been handed down to them from the earlier generations, that the housewife should not sweep the house immediately after her husband leaves the home for office or his workplace. He wont return home safe and sound, will he? Or, it is like giving him up for ever, isnt?//

//had referred to the act of sweeping the house by the housewife before her husband leaves for office. I thought you would say something on it, like the reasons therefor; or, is it a mere superstition?

Be assured Sir, When it comes to our loved ones (parents, sons, daughters, siblings etc.), all of us will go to any length, never mind whether it is a superstition or a reasonable act.

If I dont know the reasons for the wife sweeping the house in time, I will still defend her on the grounds of her love for her husband and going any length for him. However, after I have defended thus, I will leave it unsaid, it is just superstition! There I am, with a malicious glee!//

Very good, Sir, you have managed a reply although cleverly soft-pedelling it, I mean, not committing yourself to it.

No matter.

Even if you don't, I do, using your own words on other donts. (or taboos, which is the correct word for traditional don'ts)

You have given reasons for other taboos which you have been told by the elders in your family like your amma, paatti, etc.

Such reasons are scientific; and that was why, you are proudly sharing them with your captive audience here. Further, the taboos became attractive to you; and you still practice some of them, like using the ladle properly in handling different food items.

In the present case of sweeping the floor by the housewife, cited by me, you are non-committal. Because, the reason is plain superstition. Am I correct?

But still, my dear, I feel, there must be something substantial behind this act too.

Go on & find it out; and, as and when you do succeed, share it in this same thread.

Till then, good bye!

Thank you.

Without prejudice to your elucidation, I feel there is an element of disrespect and disregard involved in cleaning the house immediately after the husband leaves the house for work. 'Appaadaa...tholainchaan'.

Such disrespect is indeed on the wife too, because, by marrying him, she has become his better half. hasnt she? So, she is in fact disrespecting herself.

To avoid such negative feelings, dont sweep the house immediately. Either sweep it before he leaves; or, after a long gap of time, after he has left.

I dont find any scientific reason for such act. Only a sentimental reason.

Such sentiments are mostly noticed in women. A man does not bother about such niceties.

Giving the child a bath after it has recovered from the small pox. You have referred to it also.

The bath is called ritual cleansing using water mixed with neem leaves and turmeric. It is associated more with religious sentiments, than with hygenics.

It is a childhood disease. The bath is given to the child outdoors, generally in the mutram, in full public view. It is an indirect way of telling the neighbours that the child has recovered from the infectious disease; and now, there is no objection for the visitors to the house.

If it is a girl child, the ritual bath consists of just a few mugs of water; thereafter, the child is taken indoors and given a thorough bath.

The small pox, as you know, is considered to be the visitation of 'Amma' (maariammaa) 'Amma vanthirukkaa'. She will stay as your honored guest in your home by incubating the child. Tamils dont consider it a scourge of God. It is a divine disease.

Keeping the house spic and span; pre-warning the neighbours not to visit; the husband and wife keeping off sexual activity etc. will make the 'amma' propitated and happy. She leaves your home, in course of a fortnight.

As you may be hinting here in your 'periyavaa...' series, such customs and practices are imparted to people by using religious sentiments. At the same time, its main purpose of keeping people healthy is achieved, without they being aware of.

Scientifically, the disease is self-limiting. All that is required for the disease to go is to make the child completely quarantined. A child has low immunity. Careless quarantine may lead the child to acquire a secondry infection like common cold etc. The body of the child has resources of WBCs only to fight the primary disease. Therefore, more often than not, the secondary infection will be fatal. So, a perfect quarantine is absolutely essential for the child.

The name of the disease itself is not to be mentioned in conversations for fear that the amma will be annoyed with us.

Thus, perfect quarantine is achieved successfully by Tamils through the use of religion. How nice!

More can be written; but it is enough right now.

As you may be hinting here in your 'periyavaa...' series, such customs and practices are imparted to people by using religious sentiments. At the same time, its main purpose of keeping people healthy is achieved, without they being aware of.
